Mother's Day

I know that Mother's Day isn't a happy day for everyone. I have so many friends who have lost their moms, have lost children, never had children, never had a mom who was present or if she was, wasn't a healthy presence.. the list of reasons is as varied as the individual women who have them. The older I get, the more I see the pain that this day can cause to those around me. And even as I celebrate my mother(s) and daughter (who is a mom herself), my heart still breaks for those for whom this day TOTALLY sucks... because, let's face it... it does and can.... so if you're reading this and Mother's Day is NOT a good day for you, please know that I am keeping you close in my heart and sending you my love. I can't do much, but I can sit with you in your pain and hold your hand until it passes.

And, I will also celebrate my mom, my step-mom, my mother-in-law, my daughter, the bonus moms who've shown up in my life when I needed that extra bit of guidance, love and support. I have been blessed with some truly stellar women and for that I am eternally grateful.

This is the piece I built for my daughter, it's called "I've Always Got Your Back". Polar bears became a symbol of support and togetherness to our little family before she was born, and they've stayed a constant reminder to us over the years that she is never alone. As she forges her own path as a woman and a mom, she'll always have me at her back.....
